South Bucks Hospice
South Bucks Hospice is a local organisation that offers caring, compassionate and free support to individuals who have been diagnosed with a life limiting condition. They are also on hand to help the families to adjust and cope with the challenges that life now presents.
The team at South Bucks Hospice were looking for a means of using video communication to improve the services that their team could offer patients. Framework Digital felt strongly that this was a way in which we could support a local charity.
OppsinBucks
is an inclusive strategic approach to education business links in Buckinghamshire. OppsinBucks will broker and facilitate education business links across all partners. It is the online platform for the Bucks Skills Hub.
Bucks UTC and Framework Digital
In a bid to tie the project in with another objective of supporting young people to gain relevant workplace experience, we decided to work with a couple of students at Bucks UTC on this brief.
Alan Bailey, Head of Computing at Bucks UTC thought this would be an excellent work placement project for the students and offered their support and use of the UTC’s resources. He presented the opportunity to his students following which two students, Will and Charlie, took up the challenge.
The first step was identifying the video conferencing technology that would be suitable. As Skype is the most widely used option, Will and Charlie began by exploring this tool. As a familiar and straight forward option, Skype is an affordable and accessible means of video conferencing which was ideal for testing the short term requirements of the South Bucks Hospice.
With support from both Framework Digital and the staff at Bucks UTC, the students made the technology ready for the patients. This involved setting up and testing the technology, as well as providing instructions for the patients on how to add an email and personal details.
They also began researching the potential of alternative video conferencing technology for the future, which might be more suitable as the project grows and more patients get to use it.
